FridayLive!

Join us for FridayLive!  Applying Sensible Judgement to Use of Instructional Technologies

This is a free, interactive, online event each Friday
from 2:00 - 3:00pm Eastern.
Steve Gilbert moderates an ongoing discussion about change, improving teaching and learning, and the role of technology in higher education.  Participate in this valuable and meaningful conversation bridging both our professional and personal lives. Join us to discover ideas and tools, learn and discuss!

If you believe, as we do, that technology, when well considered and well applied, can improve teaching and learning and that integrating technology into both face to face, hybrid and online classes is a challenge, then I hope you will consider registering often for
FridayLive!  and convincing your organization to become a TLT Group subscriber or becoming a TLT Group Individual Member yourself.

Individual Members also have access to ALL of the recordings of our past sessions.  (See list below.)

Your participation in our explorations online is your most valuable contribution, but supporting us financially is also very important.  Help us work together to improve teaching and learning.  It's not coincidental that this organization is the TLT GROUP.   If you value this service, you can help to support it.  The TLT Group is a very small 501c3 non-profit organization.  We have a donation page on this site.

Thanks in advance.

Enabling Better Learning Face-to-Face & Online: Strategies for Faculty & Students, LTAs & CATs

    Date: May 1, 2015

Time: 2:00-3:00 pm ET - free to all
Presenters:  Steve Gilbert, Beth Dailey, TLT Group,

Douglas Eder, Saundra McGuire, Barbara Millis, Stephen Kaufman

In March we revisted the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education and with the help of Steve Ehrmann revisited this work "Implementing the Seven Principles: Technology as Lever." In this session we will suggest various apps and LTAs that can be used today to engage online learners.

    Seven Principles - Brief History
SUMMARY:  Good practice in undergraduate education:
We do not propose to extend those Principles formally.  However, we encourage thought and discussion about what might usefully be added.   We hope to accumulate and organize a useful collection a variety of these "8th Principles."

The TLT Group offered some events related to these themes several years ago.  You can see some rough reclamations of the previous materials online at http://www.tltgroup.org/programs/8thprinciple

Examples of “Web-Adapted, Low Threshold Assessments for Improved Student Learning”

SUMMARY:  Good practice in undergraduate education:

    1. Encourages contacts between students and faculty.

    2. Develops reciprocity and cooperation among students.

    3. Uses active learning techniques.

    4. Gives prompt feedback.[See CATs]

    5. Emphasizes time on task.

    6. Communicates high expectations.

    7. Respects diverse talents and ways of learning.

The work of Parker J. Palmer and the Center for Courage and Renewal www.couragerenewal.org has guided educators and others to work and live more wholeheartedly. In this session you will experience several aspects of the Circle of Trust(R) approach. Real-time student engagement: leveraging tablets for faculty and
    future faculty development

    Date: May 29, 2015
Time: 2:00-3:00 pm ET - free to all
Presenters: Steve Gilbert, Beth Dailey, TLT Group and folks from
California Institute of Technology, Center for Teaching, Learning, and Outreach (CTLO):

    • Cassandra Horii, Director
    • Julius Su, Program Manager, Community Science Academy
    • James Maloney, Program Manager, Community Science Academy
    • Holly Ferguson, Program Manager

While educational developers work to increase student engagement – a well researched effective practice – deeper questions remain about the characteristics and effects of real-time, in-class engagement and ways to support faculty adoption. This interactive session presents unique research results on tablet-mediated collaborative learning in biology, mathematics, and chemistry courses at a research university and a community college, including analysis of time-stamped contributions, connections, and student thinking. Discussed as well is how formative, reflective self-assessments of practice can
ground technological innovations in context and theory and promote dialogue and collaboration between instructional technologists and classroom practitioners to create ‘best fit’ rather than ‘one size fits all’ innovations.

    Amazing!

    Some questions to consider:

    • What do writing and reading mean to us?
    • What does being educated mean?
    • What significance is there for the learner if the result is shared, saved or not?
    • Does it matter whether you read the whole book?  Do you have to do the whole assignment?
Short Resources. Consider reviewing these to help you decide whether to read the book or instead of reading the book. It's a great book!!
This is an interesting piece to read in addition to the book.
