Expertiza: Software support for teamwork and authentic assessment

September 24, 2010 at 2pm EDT - free to all.

Would you like a tool to authentically assess your student's work as they produce scholarly products?  This process is what Expertiza facilitates. What began as a university-based project to support the creation of student-generated content through peer review, has evolved into an open source tool that can be used in multiple teaching and learning settings. This session describes Expertiza's features and potential uses, taking us through the process of submitting work (files, URLs, or wiki pages), working in teams, collaborative editing, review/evaluation of work (from within and beyond the team), and review/evaluation of the actual reviews (by authors, metareviewers...). With feedback from reviewers, teammates, authors, and metareviewers, the instructor has copious information to use in deciding grades. With Expertiza, authentic assessment is not only practical, but based on broader evidence than can be obtained on exams.
