Challenges of Change: Collaboration & Technology in Higher Education
Alice Brown, President Emeritus, Appalachian College Association
Edwin Welch, President, University of Charleston West Virginia
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group
When is the change worth the risk? Worth our time? [It's not only about technology!] Across Disciplines & Institutions
Lessons learned from many long-term successes and some disappointments
Ed Welch and Alice Brown have each held a leadership position in one institution for an unusually long time, and accomplished much for that institution - especially vis a vis teaching, learning, and technology..
Alice and Ed will describe some of their favorite successes, the ways in which those successes depended on leadership continuity, and useful lessons they have extracted for us. They will also describe disappointments and their lessons. They will refer to their experience with significant change at the University of Charleston in West Virginia, Appalachian College Association, and recent observations of Sweet Briar College.
Participants will also be invited to discuss with our guests:
What are some examples of significant changes in last 5-10 years that were NOT worth the effort and risk? that WERE worth the effort and risk?
How can we identify a change worth working for?
What are the likely consequences of these changes? [including byproducts]
What do we do after we've thought through the risks and still want to work on this change?
WRAP-UP: What are some examples of significant changes that ARE worth working for in next 3-5 years? (NOTE: this will likely take place at 3:00 PM ET in "Afterthoughts.")
How do we get others to support the change we are committed to?
How do we get leaders on our side?
How can we build a political base for such change?... (TLT Roundtable)?
Approach: Use "their" ideas. Help them get support! [Keen/Aikido/Co-opt]
