Description:

Goal:  Introduce, discuss, recommend approaches and resources for Web-based faculty/professional development in higher education.

How can we provide more options (and fewer constraints?) to enable more people to participate in ways they find less burdensome and more helpful?

Part I Structure & Issues:  How can we "untether" much traditionally face-to-face, campus-based professional development?

What are realistic goals for "untethering" faculty/professional development?

  • PEER LEADERSHIP:  Increase faculty/peer leadership, responsibility?
  • ONLINE/ASYNCH:  Increase faculty receptivity/eagerness for Online/Asynch vs. Face-to-Face Activities?
  • SELF-DIRECTED: Increase faculty receptivity/eagerness for self-directed vs. completely structured by others vs. mixture?

How can we reduce constraints on place and time without eliminating valuable options?  Without increasing workload for staff and faculty?  Without increasing other costs? What are those "valuable options"?  For whom?  I.e.,

  • MAINTAIN:  What features of face-to-face activities are both important and possible to provide in online sessions?
  • NO LOSS:  What features of face-to-face activities are not important to provide in online sessions?   No loss! Better left out?
  • IMPROVE:  What features of online sessions can support improvements over face-to-face options?

Part II Resources & Recommendations

What resources are already available but under-utilized?(e.g., "Compassionate Pioneers")  What effective practices are emerging from recent "webinars"?

Please take a few minutes to give us your perspective, pre-event survey
