How to Include Meaningful Interactivity within Live, Synchronous, Online Learning Sessions

When constrained by common adverse conditions
(i.e., How can good old Classroom Assessment Techniques be used online when…)

  • Online meeting time is VERY LIMITED (e.g., Only 1 or 2 sessions; “too much to cover”)
  • Learners are not in the same physical space as leader/facilitator/teacher
  • Cannot ensure that ALL the learners
    • will use Internet via the same combination of device, operating system, user interface, …
    • will be fully ready to use any single designated tool for online interactivity before the first session begins.

But, all learners do have some kind of viable internet access during synchronous sessions.

Description

We'll describe at least one specific recommendation and invite participants to suggest others and ask questions.

A.  SAMPLE SUGGESTION:  Have BOTH a “voice of the room” (a person who serves as interface between distant leader and group)  AND a “voice of the vote” (a person who services a “counter”/summarizer of results displayed visibly via some physical devices for voting   (eg, thumbs up/down; colored cards).

With these two roles in place,  lots of CATs Classroom Assessment Techniques will work

B.  PROMPT FOR DISCUSSION:  For a group of people who have NOT all previously logged in to a specific website, set up an account, and used a resource… (e.g., Kahoot;  Quizlet)... HOW TO GET THE FULL GROUP ABLE TO USE A TOOL FOR LIVE INTERACTIVITY (E.G., Polleverywhere; TODAYSMEET, …) rapidly, confidently in the future?  In either, both of these situations:

  1. GROUP IS MEETING ONCE (Cannot rely on this group ever convening as a full group again)
How “ENSURE” that all participants do the minimal necessary preparation before the meeting?  OR: How remove the need for all to do any prep?
  2. GROUP IS MEETING AT LEAST TWICE (Can rely on full group reconvening at least once again)
How “ENSURE” that all participants do the minimal follow-up/prep between the first 2 meetings?  OR: How remove the need for all to do anything in between meetings?
